[Exhibition Announcement] AMS Photo Gallery: "Where Photography Resides"

I am pleased to announce my participation in the group exhibition "Silver Halide & Wooden Panel Exhibition: Where Photography Resides" currently held at AMS Photo Gallery in Kyoto.

Moving away from images consumed on digital screens, this collection explores the physical materiality of photography—rendered on wooden panels and silver halide prints—and captures the unbridgeable "distance" that remains. Below are the exhibition details along with the artist’s raw statements for each piece.

Featured Work: "Untouchable Distance"

This series consists of a three-piece set created using digital photography as well as 4×5 large-format monochrome silver halide film. The works freeze the concept of "a distance that feels reachable yet can never be touched" into physical space through the weight of wooden panels and the density of film grain.

01. Untouchable Distance I: Gaze

  • When thinking of the untouchable.

A fine art portrait of a woman with dark hair and straight bangs against a smooth, cool blue-gray background. Positioned on the left side of the frame, she looks up slightly with a dreamy, contemplative expression. Her dark hair flows over her shoulders, with delicate strands softly veiling her face and catching subtle light. She wears a simple white garment that leaves her shoulders exposed. The overall lighting is soft, cold, and quiet, creating an atmosphere of emotional distance, memory, and calm introspective beauty.

02. Untouchable Distance II: Threshold

  • Suffocating under the weight of "rules" humans imposed upon themselves.

An artistic, closely cropped fine art photograph of a woman against a dark, moody backdrop with rich film grain. The composition crops out her eyes, focusing on her lower face with subtle red lipstick, her throat, and her upper body. She is draped in an elegant, loosely knotted white fabric that flows across her torso. The cool blue and charcoal color palette, combined with the heavy silver-halide grain texture, emphasizes presence, memory, and physical trace over identity.

03. Untouchable Distance III: Trace

  • Affirming that person.

A dark, atmospheric fine art photograph shot on 4x5 monochrome film. A person is captured from behind, sitting in profile on a white block against a deep indigo-blue background. They hold an antique wooden tripod in front of them with one hand. Wearing a dark lace top and high-waisted briefs, their back and legs are exposed under low-key lighting. The image features a distinct, heavy analog film grain texture, evoking a sense of tangible history, boundary, and quiet isolation.

The gallery brings together 56 remarkable wooden panel and silver halide photographic works from artists across the country. Beyond a standard group display, it serves as a highly concentrated space where each artist genuinely confronts the question: "Where does photography reside as a physical material?"

Final Words

Unlike images endlessly scrolled on digital screens, there is a tangible texture in the prints, a three-dimensional weight in the wooden panels, and a distinct "sense of distance" created by the lighting and air of the venue.

If you are in the area, we cordially invite you to visit the gallery and experience firsthand the presence and subtle distortion of distance emanating from the physical works.
