Friction and the Urge to Leave Something Behind/

I mounted a wide-angle lens onto my 4x5 camera.
Without modification, the distance between the lens and the film plane couldn't be shortened enough, making it impossible to focus at infinity.
So, I used a recessed lens board to sink the lens deeper into the body.
This should allow me to reach infinity focus.
However, it brought a physical hassle: because the lens is buried deep inside the frame, there is no room for my fingers.
Adjusting the aperture lever or cocking the shutter has become extremely difficult.
Opening and closing the aperture now requires poking a small tool or tweezers into the tiny gap.
It is undeniably tedious.
Ordinarily, one would look for an easier way.
Yet, this awkward, friction-filled process feels strangely fitting for where I am right now.
At work, the tasks flow endlessly, day after day.
No matter how much I accomplish, the next job is already waiting.
If I simply go through the motions, another day slips away.
I often return home after midnight.
It was the same when I changed jobs before...
Perhaps it was not Yuichi Nakamura himself who was being valued.
Maybe I had simply been working under the shadow of the company's name.
So, what will actually remain in my life?
I try to hold on to the memories of making products together with other people.
Yet, even those memories will eventually fade once I am gone.
Perhaps I was merely fooling myself into thinking I was leaving something behind through my job.
That is why I feel a strong desire to leave something behind.
That feeling is probably quite strong.
To that end, I haul out this heavy 4x5 camera.
Perhaps I am merely struggling in vain.

In the midst of all this, I received a letter.
It has no direct connection to my photography.
All I can really write about here is the simple fact that I received it.
My days are usually consumed entirely by the mechanical routine of making things for work.
Then, an exchange completely unrelated to my job cuts through that routine.
It pulls me back, if only a little, from being someone who merely works.
These are things I can only feel right now...
If I were disconnected from the world, I would not even think about such things.
And somehow, I found that deeply precious.
Today again, I poke a small tool into the fingerless space of the lens board to operate the shutter and aperture.
It is bothersome.
But maybe, for now, that is exactly as it should be.
It doesn't come easy.
Even so, I carry my 4x5 and take photos.
Right now, that is what I am doing.
The desire to turn this into art, alongside the reality that I am still only experimenting with how to make it into a picture.
