What Slipped Through the “3 Out of 2,200”

Through a dialogue with the true core of my creative drive and joy, it became clear to me once again why I love photography.
I love photographing people.
I don’t know what the "right answer" is. So I talk, I move them, and I chase that split-second expression.
In two 20-minute sessions, I trip the shutter 2,200 times, only to select a mere 3 frames for final delivery.
Yet in all the off-shots—the 2,197 frames that fell away—I want to capture the full spectrum of their raw humanity: every emotion of joy, anger, sorrow, and delight.
When they choose to actually use the photos I took, it brings me genuine joy.
All the more so because I don’t charge a shooting fee.
When someone chooses to use my work, I feel as though I am truly being put to the test as a photographer.
