[Production Record] Through Rigorous Testing of Fine Art Papers: Why the Fusion of Washi and FRP (Resin) Becomes Essential

Chapter 1: Experimental Testing of Diverse Premium Fine Art Papers

In my studio, I have gathered and tested a wide array of world-class fine art papers, centered around the ILFORD GALERIE series, including textured cotton rag, smooth cotton rag, and traditional Japanese Washi (such as Washi Torinoko).

This choice is not based on vague intuition or romanticism. It is grounded in the objective fact of having personally acquired, test-printed, and chemically evaluated a vast range of professional substrates to analyze their physical compatibility with my unique process.

Chapter 1:

Chapter 2: Structural Compatibility Between Industrial FRP (Polyester Resin) and Washi

My signature technique, "Sculptural Photography," involves heat-polymerizing industrial polyester resin (FRP) onto a printed substrate, dissolving the photograph into the resin to render it transparent and three-dimensional.

In this process, conventional Western papers (such as cotton-based papers) possess fibers that are overly dense and uniform, causing the resin to either stop penetrating or be repelled unevenly on the surface.

Conversely, traditional Japanese Washi features a chaotic, three-dimensional network of plant fibers with organic gaps. The FRP penetrates deeply into these gaps during heat polymerization, transforming a flat two-dimensional image into a physical artifact with weight, light transmission, and intentional structural distortions.

Chapter 3: Rebellious Materiality: Bridging 1,500-Year Tradition (Washi) and Modern Industry (FRP)

Merging a 1,500-year-old organic material (Washi) with a modern non-transparent industrial material (FRP) represents my ultimate counter-statement against the instant consumption of digital images on flat screens.

From the singular negative of a 4x5 film, through high-resolution scanning and rigorous paper testing, to the final resin polymerization—this unyielding experimental process constitutes the absolute core of my artistic practice.

■ Technical Notes & Footnotes (注釈)

1. Selection of Washi Substrates

I have rigorously tested various types of traditional Japanese Washi, changing the specific paper selection depending on the nature and requirements of each artwork. The exact parameters and paper combinations remain a proprietary technique of my studio.

2. Material Flexibility and Medium Selection

Digital fine art photography is also printed on selected Washi substrates and exhibited as completed physical works. The choice of medium—whether 4x5 large-format film or digital sensors—is determined flexibly based on what best serves the individual creation. Not all works are executed exclusively on 4x5 film.
