For the upcoming Omotesando Art Night 2026, themed around the concept of "Wa no Kokoro" (the spirit of Japanese harmony and mind), I present my own visual response.

This work coexists within a single frame: the dahlia in its absolute zenith of bloom, and the same flower as it decays and withers over time.
From the very moment a flower blossoms, it begins its journey toward death. This truth, I believe, directly parallels the trajectory of a human life.
While a single image can stand alone as a completed piece, by juxtaposing the full bloom with the passage of time, I sought to capture time itself—the fluid, irreversible movement from life to impermanence. Within this, I overlay the essence of "Wa"—the quiet acceptance of transience, the profound aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi.
The catalyst for this creation was what I witnessed at a recent art fair: the radiant presence of artists affiliated with galleries.
They shone with brilliance, purely and hungrily engaging with their expression in search of new encounters. I was intensely stimulated by their energy. In that space, everything—beyond the boundaries of monetary value, simply meeting and speaking with people—was electrifying.
As a man over fifty, someone from whom society often averts its eyes with discomfort, I felt a powerful urge. I realized that if I want to survive as an artist for another five or ten years, I must boldly forge my own "business card" to encounter someone new.
Yet, behind this serenity lies a gritty physical reality. Sealing this transient time on Japanese Washi paper with polyester resin (FRP) is a fierce battle.
The process triggers a brutal chemical reaction, releasing toxic gases while the material surges to temperatures reaching 100°C. Under this extreme thermal load and stress, the fibers of the Washi paper dissolve and turn translucent. Why should I fear the poison? If I weren't mad, I would never dedicate myself to such absolute futility.
All this labor and hazard, only to result in a palm-sized piece—essentially, a "plastic toy." Presented at Edition 1/1 for 3,000 yen. What is the meaning of this?
Why do I create? I hold the answer within me.
It is a desire completely detached from the evaluation of strangers—a raw necessity to create something as pure and unprompted as the spring water of the Ochiai River. And just like those artists I saw at the fair, I too hungrily want to "meet people."
If this work remains unsold, it means facing the harsh reality that it is nothing but garbage. Fine Art is, by its very nature, cruel.
Thus, if it does not sell, I will carry this physical matter and walk the world until I meet the one who will welcome it. A walking journey of an old man whose remaining time is short.
This weekend, at Omotesando Art Night 2026, I will present this answer as an artist.
