Constructed Prices and Where I Stand in the Mud/

artistic process photography Recently, an encounter at an exhibition left me reflecting deeply on pricing and the act of "selling" art. How should an emerging artist price their work? There are no simple answers. Selling cheaply doesn't equal sincerity, nor does a high price tag naturally guarantee artistic value. I fully understand why galleries and the art market prioritize track records and figures. Realistically, without funds, you cannot survive or buy materials for your next project.
In fact, I have actively tried selling my work. To me, a sale felt like validation, and practically, it funded the raw FRP materials for my next piece. That is why I do not dismiss artists who use aggressive pricing strategies.
Yet, when I set aside the thought of "selling" altogether, I found myself confronting an intense, raw internal conflict.
Right now, I can't even think about ten years down the road. All I can see is the ground directly beneath my feet: What am I trying to capture right now? Why am I moving? The idea of selling has completely cleared out of my mind. It is just me, facing my true self and my work.
So, I abandoned thoughts of selling. I hauled a 4x5 camera into the pouring rain, waded into the mud at the river, and made exposures. And yet, what came back on the film was, at first glance, just an ordinary photograph of a river.
Does this even mean anything? To be honest, the result leaves me feeling anxious. The more I look at photographs out in the world, the more painfully clear it becomes that I am nowhere near that level.
"You talk big, but after all that action, this is all you could manage?" "This is your level?" Because... it's just a regular photo of a river.
Facing that outcome is frustrating. Yet, no matter how pathetic I feel, no matter how overwhelmed I am by my own lack of skill, I find myself wanting to go out and shoot again. Honestly, it’s somehow fun.
There is a glaring contradiction here. Even while claiming I want to "do as I please," part of me still cares about how others evaluate me. I catch myself comparing my work to others. "You do as you please, but in the end, what are you trying to say?" I think I am scared of reaching that blank space where I have no answer—because right now, I have nothing tangible in my hands yet.
The efficiency is terrible. What I am doing right now is digging up my own foundations and testing things out step by step.
Even so, I refuse to lie to myself about what I make. Maybe I just need to get out there in the mud, collect my film, and think later. Less overthinking, more moving.
My thoughts will evolve—because I am alive. This is simply an honest log of where I stand right now: wandering in the mud, yet choosing to take another step anyway.

P.S.
Caked in mud, thinking to myself, "What on earth am I doing all the way out here?"—I realize I actually love those moments.
And strangely enough, in those moments, I feel as though I am not walking alone.
Physically, of course, I am completely alone. Hauling a heavy 4x5 camera through the rain, wading through the muddy river. Objectively speaking, even I think it looks a little absurd (laughs). And yet, I don't feel alone. I feel a presence walking alongside me.
Who it is, or why I feel that way, I can't quite explain. But simply feeling that presence in the rain brings a quiet joy. I suppose that is why I keep wanting to go back out into the mud.
