1. Work Record
Identity: Kino is a portrait work created upon a direct request from the subject. The subject bears surgical scars from 18 years ago, which have significantly shaped her psychological self-image.
For this work, a 4x5 large-format film camera was used for the first time in the artist’s practice. The choice of medium emphasizes physical density, tonal depth, and irreversibility of the recorded body.
The final prints were produced by AMS in Kyoto and presented as material objects rather than digital images. The work was awarded both the FUJIFILM Create Award and the Shinya Takahashi Award.
2. Reception and Dialogue
Within the exhibition context, the work functioned as a counterpoint to conventional portrait imagery driven by aesthetic consumption.
Visitor responses included:
“What is usually hidden is transformed into expression.”
“The unretouched presence of the body felt profoundly healing.”
Juror Shinya Takahashi stated:
The work therefore expanded beyond technical evaluation, opening a discussion on the ethical dimensions of photographic intervention.
3. Artistic Transformation
This work fundamentally redefined the artist’s understanding of portraiture.
In contemporary visual culture, bodily scars and imperfections are often treated as elements to be corrected or erased. This work instead chooses to preserve them as material fact.
Through the irreversibility of 4x5 film, the temporality of the body is fixed as an objective presence.
This experience later informs the conceptual framework known asAIO (Absolute Intervention of the Original).
However, AIO is not a declarative doctrine, but a structure that emerges as an observable consequence of practice.
この経験は、後に私が定義する理論**AIO(Absolute Intervention of the Original)**へと接続される。
