Layer 1: The Fact — Manifestation of Two Waters

In the spring of 2026, I participated in the Washi Photography Exhibition hosted by AMS Co., Ltd., a professional photographic laboratory based in Kyoto.

For this exhibition, I presented two works that symbolize an important transition in my artistic practice: Kaei — Flower Shadow and Element Water... Sedimentation of Memory.

Printed not on conventional photographic paper but on photographic Washi developed by AMS, these digital images underwent a phase transition from immaterial data into physical entities possessing overwhelming material presence.

Layer 2: External Evaluation and Dialogue with the Artisan

After printing the works, I visited the AMS laboratory and engaged in extensive dialogue with the artisans.

Washi traditionally struggles with the reproduction of deep black tones because the fibers scatter light and absorb large amounts of ink, often producing wrinkles and distortions.

However, I considered those phenomena to be the very essence of Element Water.

The ink penetrates through water.

The paper deforms.

Those irreversible wrinkles are not noise, but traces of water itself.

I told the artisans:

“Please do not worry about the wrinkles. Mount the work as it is.”

Yet the artisans at AMS returned an answer far beyond my expectations.

While accepting the enormous amount of absorbed ink, they achieved perfectly flat Washi prints with deep black surfaces.

Their response exceeded the artist’s intention through material mastery itself.

The trust between artist and artisan revealed itself through the work.

Layer 3: Artistic Evolution — Toward AIO

The Washi works produced at AMS left a decisive question within me.

Digital data is not the completed artwork.

It is a record awaiting intervention.

The moment light settles upon Washi — a material born from water — photography undergoes a phase transition into an inviolable original object that contains the body and the duration of another person.

The experiments at AMS became a place where the sovereignty of material itself was questioned.

The memory of water embodied in Washi later connected with the absolute intervention of FRP, gradually clarifying the contours of my artistic theory:

AIO — Absolute Intervention of the Original.

AIO(Absolute Intervention of the Original)の輪郭を明確にしていった。
